- Protective products needed for welding include general fire-resistant clothing, safety glasses, gloves and helmets.
- Heavy flame-resistant gloves (made from a material such as leather) should always be worn to protect hands and wrists from burns, cuts and scratches. As long as they are dry and in good condition, these specialty gloves will also offer some insulation against electric shock.
- Burns are the most common injury to welders because of sparks landing on exposed skin. Burns from welding arcs are particularly intense.
- Because of its durability and resistance to fire, wool clothing is recommended over synthetic fabrics when arc welding. Synthetic clothing should never be worn, because it melts when exposed to extreme heat. Cotton can be worn if it is specially treated for fire retardation.
