How Are Industrial Gases Used?

Acetylene. Acetylene is capable of welding materials at exceptionally high temperatures. Thus, it’s typically used for specialized purposes which other gases can’t meet. It is used in the chemical industry to synthesize substances like Vitamin A and some plastics.

Carbon Dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a common material which is used as a refrigerant, in fire extinguishers, for inflating life rafts and life jackets, blasting coal, foaming rubber and plastics, promoting the growth of plants in greenhouses, immobilizing animals before slaughter, and in carbonated beverages.

Helium. The most known use for helium is one you’re likely familiar with—blowing up balloons! However, helium does much more. It’s used in health care facilities to guarantee the superconductivity of magnets in MRI units. Helium is also used in the manufacture of fiber optics and electronics such as flat screens and semiconductors, and space exploration and satellites.

Nitrogen. Food production uses nitrogen to replace oxygen in packaging of perishable foods. Without oxygen, the shelf life of foods such as meats, fruits, vegetables, and packaged snacks can be increased. Nitrogen gas can also be introduced in food packaging to provide protection during transport.

Argon. Argon is commonly used in welding to provide a protective shield. Shielding prevents molten metals from air contaminants and the effects of oxidizing substances like oxygen or water vapor. Adding helium improves argon’s heat transfer properties.

Argon/Carbon Dioxide Blends. This is another gas used in welding. Combining argon with carbon dioxide or oxygen helps to stabilize the welding arc.

Beer Gas. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide are mixed at different ratios to work with different types of beer. The right beer gas blend is important for getting a perfect consistency and flavor when pouring the beer.

Oxygen. Oxygen is a key ingredient for many of the processes that take place in steelmaking and other metals refining. Oxygen is also utilized in chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petroleum processing, glass, and ceramic manufacturing, as well as pulp and paper production. Oxygen is widely used in hospitals, outpatient healthcare centers, and in at-home care.
